Margaritas are quickly becoming one of the UK’s most loved cocktails, rivaling the popular Aperol Spritz during the summer months. As whispers circulate that margaritas are now outpacing the Pornstar Martini in sales in Pubs & Bars, it’s clear that this classic cocktail is here to stay. But how can bars and home bartenders alike capitalise on this trend? The answer lies in perfecting the classic recipe, then adding fun & unique twists to stand out from the competition.
The Classic Margarita
A classic Margarita is simple yet delightful. The essential ingredients include your favourite Tequila, I prefer a Blanco Tequila. A orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice. For those who find the traditional recipe a bit too sour, a touch of agave syrup can balance the flavours perfectly. Serve it in a glass rimmed with chili powder for an extra kick.
50ml Blanco Tequila
15ml Cointreau/Triple Sec - I actually prefer a more vibrant Orange Liqueur.
25ml Lime Juice
10-15ml Agave Nectar (Optional)
Spicy Margarita Variations
Spicy margaritas, or Picante's, are all the rage. There are several ways to add heat to your margarita:
swap the Orange liqueur for a Chilli liqueur,
muddle fresh Chillies,
use chili syrup, in place of Agave
or add a few drops of Chilli Bitters.
Each method offers a unique flavour profile, allowing you to customise the spice level to your liking.
Mango Picante Margarita
For a fruity twist, try the Mango Picante Margarita. This version combines tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, mango puree, and chili bitters. The result is a refreshing cocktail with a perfect balance of sweetness and spice. Serve it in a glass with a chili-rimmed edge and garnish with fresh chilies for a stunning presentation.

Grilled Peach Margarita
Now bare with me, don't forget my whole mantra, Long Life, Shelf Stable, Faff Free!
So, to recreate the flavours of grilled peaches, I mix tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, peach puree, caramel syrup, and oak smoke bitters. The caramel and oak smoke bitters mimic the charred notes of grilled peaches, creating a complex and delicious cocktail. Garnish with dried peach slices for an elegant touch.

Watermelon and Hibiscus Margarita
Finally, the Watermelon and Hibiscus Margarita offers a fresh and floral option. Combine tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, watermelon syrup, and hibiscus bitters. This vibrant cocktail is perfect for summer and can be garnished with hibiscus flowers for an eye catching finish.
